Chapter Nine

Patrick checked the clock in the lounge and decided that, since it was nearly four o’clock, it was too late to do anything worthwhile further afield, and so carried on into the bar and ordered a pint of Guinness. He was just about halfway down the glass when he felt someone join him and turned to smile at Hillary.

‘And what can I get for the hero of the hour?’ he asked. It had been inevitable that the news of Jasper’s mugging would rapidly become a minor sensation amongst the small hotel’s inhabitants, but Hillary hoped that it would be short-lived. She didn’t feel comfortable in the limelight. When she asked for a white wine spritzer, it was promptly produced by the barman.

She had got herself comfortable on the bar stool next to him, and was raising her glass to him in appreciation, when she noticed his eyes move beyond her to a point just over her shoulder.

She didn’t need to turn around, for she knew who was joining them; Ian had told her only a few minutes ago that he wanted to reinterview Patrick next, and they’d decided that this ‘accidental’ meeting in the bar was the best way of allowing that to take place in a way that seemed natural for her to be in on the proceedings.

‘Ah, Mr Unwin, I’m glad I ran into you again. I’ve one or two follow-up questions for you. Nothing too alarming — just some background information on you this time,’ she heard Ian say as he passed by her and took the stool on the other side of Patrick. ‘I’ve been learning all about your misspent youth. I’ll have a tonic with ice please,’ he added to the barman.

Judith’s brother Lloyd nodded and diplomatically went out to the kitchen just off the bar, ostensibly to fetch more ice.

‘Uh-oh, that sounds ominous,’ Patrick grinned. ‘Whatever it is you’ve been learning, I’m guilty as charged, your honour!’

He turned a little on the bar stool so that he could fully face the policeman, presenting Hillary with his half-turned shoulder and left side profile. Dressed in casual jeans and a short-sleeved cream-coloured T-shirt that revealed his thin but wiry tanned arms, Hillary was reminded of his former profession as a jockey. Although short at only five feet four or so, she reminded herself that this man, whilst he might look almost elfin with his curly brown hair and blue eyes, was probably, physically, the fittest of all their suspects.

Not that it needed a lot of muscle to slip a very sharp blade into someone, she reminded herself.

Ian grinned. ‘Oh, I don’t doubt it,’ he agreed. ‘I’ve had the chance now to talk to some of my colleagues in the racing game, and although I was sure I already had a good idea about how murky it could be, I’ve had my eyes well and truly opened, I can tell you.’

Although Ian, after discussing the ins-and-outs of the Van Paulen situation with her had gone on
